It’s hard to learn to read without books.
More than 15% of the children in the United
States live in poverty. On average, these kids
have one or two age appropriate books in their
homes. Sixty-one percent of the children in
low-income families have
no books at all.
And while the national average estimates 18
books per student in school libraries, many
schools in depressed areas often have
less than one
book per student.
The
Inland Empire United Way is collecting new books
for children in K-5 school who are in need of
some fun and imaginative books. These books
will be used as part of HandsOn's "Read
To Kids!" project which gives new books to
kids every month as part of a monthly reading
club.
Bring your donations between the hours of 9 and
4 pm, Monday through Friday before December 24
