Volunteer with Hands On Inland Empire!
February 2007

Celebrate Cesar E. Chavez Day
by Building a KaBOOM! Playground!
Saturday, March 31
8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Franklin Elementary School - Redlands

Celebrate the legacy and teachings of Cesar E. Chavez by joining us for a transformative Day of Service at Franklin Elementary School in Redlands.  300 volunteers will join together to build a KaBOOM! playground, paint a mural celebrating Cesar Chavez, construct a community garden and much more!

No experience is necessary -- we'll show you everything you need to know to create an exciting new playspace and a vibrant school, in just one day!

Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age (18 years of age to be in the actual build site area), but families are welcome to bring their school age children. Youth activities for ages 5-13 will be provided. (Children under the age of 5 cannot attend.) All volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

Click here to sign up for March 31 Day of Service and be part of the fun. Volunteers are also needed for the Prep Day on March 29th

If you're good at leading people and can attend a training from noon to 1 p.m. on March 29th, volunteer to be a build-captain! We'll train you to lead others in making the work simple, productive and fun.  E-mail Larry Deckel or call (909) 980-2857 ext. 208 to become a build-captain!

Massive Book Distribution a Great Success!

Thank you to dozens of volunteers who contributed their time and strong backs to help us get 270,000 books into the hands of kids. Representatives from First Book flew in from Washington D.C. to work with our volunteers distributing books to dozens of local agencies here in the Inland Empire. In addition, volunteers sorted, labeled, and mailed box after box after box of books all across the country!  It was fun, busy, and the smiles we got from agencies picking up their books made it all worth while.

Get Earthy!
Join us for an Earth Day School Revitalization Project
Saturday, April 21
8 a.m. - 1 p.m.
South Tamarind Elementary School  - Fontana

In honor of Earth Day, 300 volunteers are needed to join together in Fontana to landscape, build gardens and apply fresh vibrant color to the campus of South Tamarind Elementary School.

We will be creating "greenspaces" that will give the students the opportunity to learn about the environment, and they will also provide outdoor classrooms that supplement and expand the environmental science curriculum.

Get ready for the biggest day of volunteerism ever seen in the Inland Empire!  Save the Date! On June 9th, hundreds of volunteers will gather at multiple project sites throughout San Bernardino and Eastern Los Angeles counties for Hands On Inland Empire Day!

Working together, we will transform, revitalize and brighten Inland Empire schools.  We will paint, plant, read to kids and leave a lasting mark on our community and the agencies that serve those in need.

How's it going to happen?  We need volunteers to join our planning committees to get everything in motion. To find out more and join the Project Committee, Logistics Committee, or Outreach Committee, click here.

To become a sponsor and mobilize a team of volunteers click here.

Working together - we're making the Inland Empire a better place!  Please help us in planning and being a part of this gigantic event!

HOT Project of the Month!

Puppy Love (and Cuddly Kittens!)
Saturday, March 10, 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Homeless animals need your help. These dogs and cats need human companionship to remind them what a loving family  is like. The time volunteers spend socializing these abused, abandoned and needy dogs and cats helps to make them adoptable and increases the odds that the shelter can find them new homes. Click here for playtime with pets at the West End Shelter for Animals!

HOT Referrals of the Month!

Homeless Census
February 28 - early morning!
Help is desperately needed for the county-wide Homeless Census. It's 5 - 9 a.m., so you can volunteer before work!  Click here to help with this important project!

Notebook Assemblers (Redlands)
Thursday and Friday, March 1 and 2, 1:30 - 4:00 p.m.

The Student Services Office of the Redlands Unified School District needs help from youth and adults to assist with the assembly of notebooks to be given to homeless and/or students in need. Click here if you can help!

Can We Talk?

Join us for this month's Conversation Cafe.  Our goal is to create a forum for thought-provoking discussions and an opportunity for open dialogue. It's fun, easy and interesting! Make new friends and find ways to create positive change in the world we live in!

This month's topic:
How do stereotypes affect how we interact with one another?

Click here to sign up for our second Conversation Cafe on March 7.
